A contract on the supply of enriched uranium between the French company AREVA and the Ukrainian enterprise SE NNEGC “Energoatom” was signed on 24 April 2015 in the representative office of SE NNEGC “Energoatom” in Brussels.

The contract was signed by Mr. Yuriy Nedashkovsky, President of SE NNEGC “Energoatom”, and Mr. Olivier Wantz, Senior Executive Vice President, AREVA Mining & Front End.

The significance of the deal is that it represents a further concrete step towards the energy independence of Ukraine in line with Energoatom’s consistent strategy to diversify its supply chain. “Today we signed a contract that extends our cooperation with AREVA - one of the world leaders in the field of nuclear technologies. This contract is a real step towards the diversification of nuclear materials supply to Ukrainian NPPs” – said Yuriy Nedashkovsky after signing the contract.

AREVA won the business not only because their price proposal was the most attractive, but also due to the risk guarantees for Energoatom foreseen by the contract.

During the meeting the Parties also discussed current questions of cooperation between two nuclear companies, as follows:

  • Experience exchange regarding construction and safe commissioning of NPP including safety increase;
  • Management of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and radioactive wastes (RW);
  • Modernization and safety increase of Ukrainian NPPs;
  • Lifetime extension of power units;
  • Nuclear safety, radiation protection of environment and NPP personnel.

AREVA is a long established partner of Energoatom. There is an existing agreement between the companies in force since 2011 which sets out a road map for nuclear energy co-operation between SE NNEGC “Energoatom” and AREVA. The agreement covers used fuel and radioactive waste management, including storage, transportation and reprocessing.

 Mr. Yuriy Nedashkovsky, President of SE NNEGC “Energoatom”, and Mr. Olivier Wantz, Senior Executive Vice President, AREVA Mining & Front End
